Electoral rolls: SC caution on photos

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday expressed caution in passing orders allowing requests for removal of photographs from photo electoral rolls on religious grounds. If we give privilege to one candidate,lakhs of other candidates will come, a three-judge Bench said. It was hearing a petition contending that publishing photos of Muslim Gosha women was against their religious beliefs.

Right to Education Act notified

NEW DELHI: The long awaited Right to Education Act was on Monday notified,as was the enabling 86th amendment to the Constitution eight years after Parliament passed it. The Right to Education Act,which got Parliaments approval last year,will come into effect from April 1 this year along with the 86th amendment to the Constitution.

Producer,friend held with 30 kg contraband

HYDERABAD: The Hyberabad police on Monday arrested a film producer-financier and his friend for being in possession of a banned substance used to make narcotics. K Venkateshwara Rao,a producer and financier for small-budget Telugu and Kannada films,and his friend,a real estate dealer,were found to be in possession of 30 kgs Ephedrine,a contraband.

Jkhand petrol pumps to remain shut today

RANCHI: A 24-hour bandh called by Jharkhand Petroleum Dealers Association to protest the states decision to hike VAT on diesel from 14.5 per cent to 20 per cent will keep petrol pumps across the state closed on Tuesday. Jharkhand Cabinet reportedly decided to hike the VAT,effective since February 12,to generate around Rs 150 cr a year in revenue.

12-yr-old commits suicide in Vadodara

VADODARA: Manjit Bhardwaj,a 12-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his house in Ankleshwar on Monday after being scolded by his father for his poor performance in studies.
