Sunderbans: Crocodile partly devours tiger

KOLKATA: In a rare incident of conflict between animals in Sundebans Tiger Reserve,a crocodile killed and partly devoured a fully grown Royal Bengal Tiger. The patrolling party of the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve found the carcass of an eight-year-old tiger near Panchamukhi area of Dobaki Island on Tuesday morning. The patrol party recorded a footage before taking the body for post-mortem. I had earlier seen a tiger being attacked by a crocodile in 1999. But this is the first such incident, Subrat Mukherjee,Field Director of Sunderbans Tiger Reserve told The Indian Express.

Four militants killed in Meghalaya encounter

GUWAHATI: Four militants were killed in an encounter with the police in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya on Tuesday. Official sources said they were killed following Special Weapons and Tactics SWAT operation of Meghalaya police commandos on Monday. The operation lasted about five hours,but two militants managed to escape,sources said. The police recovered arms and ammunition,two cellphones with several SIM cards,and some incriminating documents. One of the militants killed has been identified as Roster Marak,a deserter constable who joined the Garo National Liberation Army GNLA,and was the deputy Commander-in-Chief of the outfit.

Manipur hill stir blocks supply lines

GUWAHATI: The supply of essential commodities and passenger transport has been severely hit due to the ongoing general strike in Manipur. CM Okram Ibobi Singhs two-hour discussion with a Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee SHDDC delegation failed to find a solution to the demand for creation of a separate Sadar Hills district,prompting agitators to extend the strike till August 31. Agitators have blocked national highway 39,the states lifeline,and have set several vehicles and government offices ablaze in the past week. The blockade has sent prices of essential commodities soaring. The United Naga Council has refused bifurcation of Naga areas without Naga consent.

Pak national held for staying illegally

LUCKNOW: The Meerut police arrested a Pakistani national on Tuesday,who was staying in India without any valid documents for the last 18 years. A resident of Lahore,Mohammad Kamil alias Mohammad Kamar 54 was arrested from Khairanagar area under Delhigate police circle in Meerut. The police have booked him under Foreigners Act. Kamar told us that his relative had taken away his documents and destroyed them, said Inspector of Delhigate police station,Ajay Kumar Srivastava. The police were tipped off a few days ago,and the local Intelligence Unit cross-checked the details and arrested Kamar.

8 pc cyber attacks by India,says China

BEIJING: Chinas computer security agency says the country suffered nearly 5,00,000 cyberattacks last year,and almost half originated overseas. The National Computer Network Emergency Response Coordination Center of China said 14.7 percent of the attacks came from the United States and 8 percent from India. Following suggestions that Beijing might be behind global cyber attacks over the past five years,,a Chinese state newspaper called it irresponsible to link China with the hacking attacks reported by McAfee Inc. China has not officially commented on the report but has denied all charges of hacking,saying the country itself is a victim.

20 years on,prisoner returns from Bangladesh

KALYANI: An Indian,sentenced to 30 years in jail by a Bangladeshi court,is back after serving 20 years. Amaresh Biswas 48,a resident of Ashoknagar,had illegally entered Bangladesh through the Kulopara-Tungi border to meet his relatives,SP Sabyasachi Raman Mishra said. Biswas was arrested by the Bangladeshi police.
