NEW DELHI: K Balachander,who brought a whiff of fresh air with daring new style in filmmaking in Tamil cinema in the 1970s,was on Friday chosen for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2010. Balachander,81,who made a transformation from a government servant to a playright and then to a leading personality in films,has also received the National Award,among others,for his films.

Ex-BARC scientist commits suicide

Mumbai: A former scientist at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre allegedly committed suicide on Friday,police said. Uma Rao,63,was found unconscious by her maid. She had consumed sleeping tablets in a large quantity, said ACP Jalinder Khandagale. A suicide note left said she was suffering from depression,and that nobody was responsible for her death.

CISF jawan commits suicide in Rajasthan

Kota: A CISF jawan on Friday shoot himself while on duty at Kota thermal power plant in Rajasthan,police said. Hiraram,38,pulled out his rifle,put it underneath his chin and fired. He died on the spot.

Notification on tax for lawyers stayed

New Delhi: In a relief to advocates,the Delhi High Court on Friday stayed a Central government notification levying 10 per cent service tax on lawyers. The notification is stayed, the HC said,on a petition by Delhi High Court Bar Association challenging the notification.

VS hails endosulfan phase-out

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala on Friday hailed the decision of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants to phase out endosulfan. The state had observed a government-sponsored hartal,demanding a nation-wide ban of endosulfan,which was banned here a decade ago. People have defeated the endosulfan lobby,which had even influenced Union ministers, C M V S Achuthanandan said.

Foreign Ministry shifts key officials

NEW DELHI: The Foreign Ministry Friday transferred key officials. Harshvardhan Shringla,who headed the UN desk,will now handle Bangladesh,Sri Lanka,Maldives and Myanmar. Pavan Kapoor,who headed the SAARC desk will head the UN desk,T S Thirumoorthy,who was heading the Bangladesh desk,will now head one of the UN divisions,Rajiv Chander,who was heading the Gulf desk will head the SAARC desk,and Ghanshyam,who headed one of the UN desks,will now head the Gulf division.
