BJD nominates Tirkey for RS

Speculation had been rife for last several days that Tirkey,34,would be BJD’s possible candidate for one of the three RS seats falling vacant this year

Dilip Tirkey, former captain and one of the best fullbacks of Indian hockey, will be Biju Janata Dal’s candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls to be held later this month.

Speculation had been rife for last several days that Tirkey,34,would be BJD’s possible candidate for one of the three RS seats falling vacant this year. “I will try my best to develop sports in Orissa,” said Tirkey, who last month mentored the Indian team defenders in their Olympic qualifiers.

While the second candidate would be Rabi Mohapatra, president of the party’s Nayagarh district unit,Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said BJD would not field any third candidate.

Tirkey and Mohapatra’s win is a foregone conclusion as BJD has 103 members in the 147-member Orissa Assembly. To win the RS election from Orissa, any candidate needs 37 first preference votes.
