A 21-year-old man,who had left his Patiala home for Toronto, ended up reaching Nepal after being trapped by a group international visa racketeers. Araria police rescued the youth at Jogbani on the India-Nepal border and handed him over to his father Saturday.
Manpreet Singh, like many youths in Punjab, wanted to go to Toronto, where his uncle also lived and made a decent earning. He,however, had been finding it difficult to get visa. He came in contact with an agent,Kunal, who promised him visa against payment of Rs 10 lakh.
Manpreet reached Kolkata four days ago. The agent,Kunal, received him and later handed him to another agent,Rana, who flew him to Bagdogra in Purnia, saying Manpreet will get a flight from there after two days, Araria SP Shivdeep Waman Lande told The Sunday Express.
Rana later drugged him and took him to Nepal, where Manpreet met the mastermind of the racket. The man, whose identity was not known, pressured Manpreet to call his father Paramjit Singh from to say he had reached Canada. The racketeers insisted that Paramjit pay Rs 10 lakh immediately. Manpreets father asked his son to arrange the money from his uncle in Canada. The uncle said he wont pay before seeing his his nephew in person, said the SP.
Lande said Manpreet saw a police party on the Indian side at Jogbani and crossed the border to seek help. The agents fled on seeing the police. Manpreets father came to Bagdogra today and took his son to Patiala, the SP added.
