At Cong meet,anti-Gogoi camp swells to 44 MLAs

Congress leaders put up a united face after a special legislature party meeting on Saturday.

In a fresh turmoil in the Assam Congress,as many as 44 MLAs,out of the total 79,expressed lack of confidence in ministers of the Tarun Gogoi Cabinet and demanded swearing-in a new government. Questioning the leadership of 77-year-old Gogoi, they said the ministers are no more following the CMs orders and the situation could not continue like this ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Congress leaders put up a united face after a special legislature party meeting on Saturday. Even Health and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is at the forefront of the revolt against Gogoi, asserted the party will stand united and work for the victory of its candidates in the LS polls. However, sources said the crisis is far from over.

The special meeting saw the number of MLAs in the disgruntled camp swell to 44. Sources said a resolution, read out at the meeting and signed by 44 MLAs,asserted that despite the generous support of the UPA government Assam continues to lag at the bottom of the development pyramid. It blamed the lack of political-bureaucratic will for this.

At the meeting,Raha MLA Pijush Hazarika said the CM and the MLAs do not have confidence in each other, sources said. The resolution,it is learnt, demanded a new government comprising clean and honest members.

The resolution reportedly did not explicitly seek ouster of Gogoi, but argued that his liberal attitude, misinterpreted as connivance, was emboldening the ministers. It also said the CM himself admitted that his orders and directions were not being heeded, hinting he was no more in control. Sources said the MLAs could convey their demand to the high command after the wedding of Gogois son this week.
