The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its judgment on BSP chief Mayawatis plea challenging a CBI probe against her in an alleged disproportionate assets case.
A Bench headed by P Sathasivam reserved its order after a two-hour-long hearing during which the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister accused the CBI of fixing the disproportionate assets case against her,a charge refuted by the agency.
Mayawati had filed the petition in May 2008 seeking the quashing of the criminal proceedings against her in the assets case lodged by the CBI over eight years ago,alleging it was an act of political vendetta.
Mayawatis counsel had said the Bench should direct the CBI to consider the aspect of order passed by the Income-Tax Tribunal holding that her income was genuine.
The order had also been upheld by the Delhi High Court,he had pointed out.
Jaya Jaitly allowed to visit Singapore
A Delhi court on Tuesday allowed former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitly,facing a trial for allegedly taking Rs two lakh as bribe to recommend a fictitious defence deal to the Defence ministry,to visit Singapore for a week.
Special CBI Judge Kanwaljeet Arora allowed Jaitlys plea to visit abroad from May 30 to June 8 to attend a panel debate,Smith Women Leading Change: Asia 2012. The court directed Jaitly to furnish a surety bond of Rs three lakh.
Balancing the twin interest of justice to be done at the earliest on one hand and the right to carry on her avocation and to facilitate her to participate in the discussion on the other,the present application filed by accused Jaya Jaitly is allowed, the court said.
Jaitlys counsel Vipin Tyagi had submitted that his client was a social activist and had been granted such permissions earlier too and that she had never misused the relief.
The lawyer said that during the period Jaitly would be represented by a counsel and would not seek any adjournment on account of her unavailability.
