At least seven rebels, suspected to be members of the United Democratic Liberation Army UDLA,were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces close to the Mizoram border in Karimganj district in southern Assam on Friday.

While the encounter took place during a joint operation carried out by the Army and Assam Police,an NCO of the Army also sustained injuries.

Karimganj SP Diganta Borah said the joint operation was mounted following specific inputs about a group of armed militants setting up a camp at Gutguti-basti inside a forest close to the inter-state border. This group is also said to have been carrying out abductions and extortions in the district in the past several months.
