Ashok Chawla to head CCI

Anurag Goel,member CCI,was also in race for the post.

After remaining headless of four months,the Competition Commission of India CCI is finally set to get a chairperson.

Sources told The Indian Express that the appointment committee of cabinet has cleared the appointment of former finance secretary Ashok Chawla as the chairman of the competition watchdog.

The CCI has been lying without a chairperson since June when Dhanendra Kumar,the chairperson of the commission demitted the office. Anurag Goel,member CCI,was also in race for the post.

Chawla said he did not receive a formal communication yet. It usually takes 2-3 days for ACC orders to be notified, he said.

The appointment assumes significance as after June 1,all high-value merger and acquisition deals have come under the purview of the commission. A Gujarat-cadre IAS officer of 1973 batch,Chawla retired as Finance Secretary on January 31. He was heading a committee on allocation,pricing and utilisation of natural resources till recently.
