A Senior IPS officer who was in-charge of a special investigation cell that was probing the multi-crore scandal in the Public Distribution System PDS in Arunachal Pradesh for the past four years has gone missing since Tuesday. The police have still not been able to find out if the officer,M S Chauhan, was kidnapped or has gone into hiding. The PDS scandal was first brought to light by The Indian Express in 2005.
A 1998-batch officer from UT cadre,Chauhan went missing around 2.30 pm Tuesday from Tippi,a small town in West Kameng. He was on his way from Itanagar to Tawang. Tippi is about 110 km from Itanagar. He was accompanied by an inspector and driver.
The police in Bomdila, the district headquarter of West Kameng, said Chauhan,on reaching Tippi got down from the vehicle and asked Inspector Mohan Kaye and driver Vikram Singh to find a suitable spot on the bank of the Kameng river where they can have lunch. When the two returned, they found Chauhan missing.
Incidentally,Chauhan had received transfer orders this month, following which he was relieved of his responsibilities in Arunachal Pradesh. He was supposed to head to New Delhi for his next posting.
Chauhan was relieved of his post on October 10,and ideally he should have proceeded to New Delhi. Why he went to Tawang is not known, Arvind Deep,IGP Crimes, told The Indian Express over the phone.
