Army jawan killed as grenade explodes accidentally in Valley

They said that the grenade was among the weapons recovered from a militant hideout on Wednesday

An Army jawan was killed and four others were injured in an accidental explosion at a camp of 21 Rashtriya Rifles in north Kashmirs Handwara town on Thursday morning.

Officials said that Sham Singh of 21 Rashtriya Rifles died and four others were injured when a grenade exploded while they were cleaning the resting camp at Zachildara in Handwara.

They said that the grenade was among the weapons recovered from a militant hideout on Wednesday.

Army spokesman 15 Corps,Naresh Vij told The Indian Express that the explosion occurred when the Army personnel were preparing for an operation. Four soldiers injured in the blast were shifted to Base Hospital,Srinagar. One of the jawans succumbed to his injuries there, he said.

However,sources said that the soldiers were preparing for a press conference to display the recovered weapons when one of the soldiers picked up a grenade and it exploded.
