A day after the Supreme Court cleared the way for iron ore mining lease for South Korean steelmaker Posco, the Orissa police on Saturday arrested top anti-Posco leader Abhay Sahu over his alleged involvement in a crude bomb blast in March this year that left three fellow activists dead.

On March 2,three anti-Posco activists were killed and another seriously injured while they were allegedly making bombs at Patana village in coastal Jagatsinghpur district. Patana, considered as the stronghold of the anti-Posco agitators, has been excluded from Poscos acquisition plans due to vociferous protests there.

Jagatsinghpur SP Satyabrata Bhoi said Sahu, president of the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti that has been spearheading the agitation against setting up of the steel plant, was arrested while he was about to board a flight to Coimbatore.

Bhoi said Sahu was behind the bomb blast of March 2. Besides this case,he has over 60 criminal cases lodged against him including that of rioting, attempt to murder, arsoning and abduction of foreign nationals. Sahu was remanded in 14 days judicial custody after a court in Jagatsinghpur rejected his bail petition.

In October 2008,Sahu was first arrested over involvement in several criminal cases. He was later granted bail.

The state government has already acquired about 2,500 acres in a phased manner amidst protests and needs to acquire another 200 acres for construction of the 8 million tonne per annum steel plant in the first phase.
