Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday slammed Union Home Minister P Chidambaram over the law and order situation in West Bengal and for continuing the joint operation against Maoists in the state.

At a press conference at her residence after she cancelled her scheduled trip to Singur, the Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief said: I have repeatedly urged the Centre to call off the joint operation. I want to ask Chidambaramji why is he keeping the forces?

Sources said Mamata was peeved with Chidambaram for cancelling his scheduled visit to Mangalkot in Burdwan where she alleged her party workers were being targeted by CPM cadres. Also, two of her ministers in the central government,Mukul Roy and Sultan Ahmed, were heckled in Sashan in North 24 Parganas.

Mamata repeated her stand there were no Maoists in the state and the joint operation was only strengthening the CPMs hands. Even after the Silda massacre no one has been arrested till now. The Union Home Minister has to answer how the CPM has opened hundreds of political camps in the affected areas despite the joint operations. Is it being done to help the CPM?
