Senior IAS officer Ajit Kumar Seth on Tuesday edged out other contenders for the topmost bureaucratic post in the country. The 1974-batch officer from UP cadre will succeed incumbent K M Chandrasekhar as Cabinet Secretary when he retires next month.
The 59-year-old is currently serving as Secretary, public grievances and coordination,in the Cabinet Secretariat and has been redesignated as Officer on Special Duty there till he assumes charge on June 14.
Interestingly,Seth has not had long stints in the Centre across ministries. He had largely served in Textile and Commerce ministries before moving to the Cabinet Secretariat. Nonetheless, his longest tenure posting from the state was in Delhi as UP Resident Commissioner for six years until 2008.
In the state government,he was largely posted in the land revenue and rural development departments besides looking over personnel issues. He served as Mainpuri district collector in 1980-82.
The Prime Minister has approved the appointment of Shri Ajit Kumar Seth as the next Cabinet Secretary with effect from June 14,2011, a brief statement from the PMO said on Tuesday.
The government seems to have gone by seniority since Seth, seniormost in his batch, pipped high profile batchmates like Pulok Chatterjee and Bihar Chief Secretary Anup Mukherjee.
Born on November 24,1951,Seth has a Masters in Chemistry and has done a stint abroad as first secretary in the permanent mission of India to the United Nations at Geneva.
