Airfares should be affordable: Thomas Cook

Amid tussle between the government and airline companies on airfare,country’s largest integrated travel company Thomas Cook today said that flying in air should be “affordable”.

“I fully agree with the government to the extent that fare have ought to be affordable,” Thomas Cook (India) Limited Managing Director Madhavan Menon told reporters here.

He,however,said that since airlines are commercial entities so a balanced fare is required.

“…please remember that airlines are commercial entities… they need to make money so there has got to be a balance in the whole thing,” Menon added.

The government intervention has put pressure on the domestic airlines to lower the overall fares on several sectors after they hiked it earlier by about 200 per cent in few sectors.

The overall airfares have come down by about 20-25 per cent in the past week.

Menon was in the capital to announce the launch of the second edition of Thomas Cook Indian Gulf League.

The league has been scheduled for duration of 12 weeks and will contain 14 competitive event rounds of golf played at five different partner courses. Five leading scores from each day qualify for the finals,which will be the 15th and concluding event.

The main participation in the league will come from players who will “pay and play” by paying Rs 1,200.

Commenting on Thomas Cook India’s growth plans,Menon said that the company’s winter sale is expected to grow by 15 per cent this year compared to the corresponding period last year.
