After GoM nod,Bhopal waste to go to Germany

A group of ministers headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram cleared the decision on Friday and sanctioned Rs 25 crore towards airlifting charges.

After years of deliberation,the government has finally decided that the the 350 metric tonnes of toxic waste at Bhopal’s Union Carbide factory will be airlifted to Germany for safe disposal. A group of ministers headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram cleared the decision on Friday and sanctioned Rs 25 crore towards airlifting charges.

The government had been in a fix all these years over the fate of the waste with environmentalists opposing all ideas of its disposal and incineration anywhere in India. Several times in the past,states like Maharashtra have refused to permit its disposal in Nagpur. Now the entire waste will be transferred to Germany within a year.

“The state government will present its agreement with German waste treatment agency GIZ IS within a year. The centre will pay Rs 25 crore for the airlifting,” said Babulal Gaur,Madhya Pradesh Minister for Bhopal Gas Tragedy,Relief and Rehabilitation.

The Madhya Pradesh government struck the deal with the German company in May 17.

Jharkhand education minister’s children now fail in revaluation too

Even after a panel of teachers re-examined their answersheets,Jharkhand’s Education Minister Baidnath Ram’s son and daughter could not pass in the state’s Class XII examination. While his daughter’s score remained unchanged,his son’s marks increased by two after the revaluation. Earlier,the minister had sought sacking of Jharkhand Academic Council chairperson Laxmi Singh for his children failing to clear the examination.
