The Congress on Wednesday said action would be taken against those found guilty of irregularities in the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society in Mumbai and the Commonwealth Games, even as it rebutted charges that the AICC meeting on Tuesday ignored the issue of corruption.
To back their contention about the Congress presidents unforgiving attitude towards corruption, ruling party sources pointed out how the leadership had shown the door to influential leaders such as former external affairs minister Natwar Singh for the oil-for-food scam, former Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari following a sex scandal,Haryana politician Venod Sharma for his son Manu Sharmas involvement in a murder case, etc.
The Congress president has been consistent all through, a senior Congress leader said on Wednesday, adding she would take action against Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan in the Adarsh row if she is convinced about the charges against him after the inquiry report and not because of media trial.
In a related development,Congress spokesman Manish Tewari Wednesday denied reports that the party ignored the issue of corruption at Tuesdays AICC meeting.
The Congress president categorically spelt out her stance in her speech when she talked about the fundamental principles and values on the basis of which the party was founded and for which we have fought, Tewari said.
She said that we have to follow sanyam, saadagi aur nishtha (restraint, simplicity and conviction) in everything we do. It was a clear message to all AICC delegates as to what she expects from them in their functioning, the Congress spokesman said.
Tewari said there were several inquiries (into allegations of scam in Adarsh housing society project): The moment their report and recommendations come, action will be taken.
