4 rebels killed as kidnapped official rescued

We received a tip-off following which an ambush was laid,said police.

Four armed militants,said to be cadres of the Rabha National Liberation Front RNLF,were killed in an encounter when the Assam police managed to free from their custody Dilip Dutta Medhi,a sericulture officer of Meghalaya,at Bagulamari in Goalpara district Sunday night.

Medhi,a sericulture officer in North Garo Hills district in Meghalaya was kidnapped on November 14 from Chotomatia on the Assam-Meghalaya border when he was travelling in a van from Resubelpara to Goalpara. The officer was rescued at around 7 pm on Sunday.

Goalpara SP Nitul Gogoi said while the police were tracking the abductors who were shifting location along with Medhi,they received a tip-off following which an ambush was laid. Accordingly,as we intercepted the vehicle and engaged the militants in an exchange of fire,we managed to rescue the officer. Four militants were killed,but two others managed to escape, SP Gogoi said. The police also recovered one carbine,one revolver and some ammunition,he added.
