
A one day UGC-sponsored national seminar on 8216;Indian women writers: A feminine perspective8217; was organised by the English department of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines here today.
Dr Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, inaugurated the seminar.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kang said that the status of women all over the world, particularly in India, has been undergoing a rapid change in the recent decades. He named some of feminist novelists and socialists who carved a niche for them, including Arundhati Roy and Anita Desai.
The one-day seminar focussed on the feminine concerns of Indian women writers and the emphasis was on the change which has occurred in the interests of women writers due to the encounter between South-Asian society and the west.
The keynote speaker, Dr N K Ghosh, head, PG department English, Agra College, said that Indian women writers have made a significant contribution with their depiction for social realities and portrayal of feminine sensibilities.
Dr TS Anand, senior faculty, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, spoke on issues in Indian diasporic writing after 9/11, in special context with Chitra Banerji, Divakaruni and Kiran Desai. Dr Rupinder Kaur, head, English department, Punjabi University, stressed the question of freedom for women should be reviewed.
