Feeling the heat after the team8217;s morale-sagging defeat against India, Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson admitted on Friday that the side has failed to show any character, leading to a furore back home.
Pakistan8217;s worst defeat against India 8212; a 140-run pounding by Mahendra Singh Dhoni8217;s men on Tuesday8211; prompted a furious cricket board chief Nasim Ashraf to seek an immediate explanation from team manager Talat Ali on the poor performance of the team as a whole and the roles of Lawson and captain Shoaib Malik in particular.
Lawson said Ashraf was entitled to his opinion, even though the Australian admitted Pakistan failed to show any character against the arch-rivals.
8220;There was no strong reaction by the Pakistan Cricket Board. I know and the PCB Chairman and he is entitled to his opinion,8221; Lawson said on the eve of the tri-series final.
Though he admitted Pakistan could not live up to the expectation, Lawson said he was not unduly worried about what others have to say about the team8217;s performance.
8220;We played uncharacteristically recently. The players know that and that is why people have reacted to the defeat in this way. But we know what the guys are actually going through and I am more concerned about the performances of my players, rather than what people are thinking about them,8221; he said.
Asked if players were not gelling well, as reported in a section of the media, an angry Lawson said, 8220;Let people raise questions and not make statements. It is incorrect to say that there is no harmony in the team.8221;
On whether the team was missing pace duo of Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, Lawson said, 8220;No, we are not missing them. We are very concerned that we play well tomorrow.8221;
Asked if Ashraf8217;s scathing e-mail had dampened the team spirit, Lawson said, 8220;We are not concerned by emails but about how the players perform tomorrow.8221;
