
The state government will give the green signal to Vadodara Municipal Corporation8217;s VMC proposal to get 300 million litres of water per day MLD from Sardar Sarovar by the year 2035, after conducting an overall assessment. VMC authorities along with the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited SSNNL officers discussed the logistics of the process in a meeting at Gandhinagar on Wednesday.
Anticipating the shortage of water that the city might face in the next two decades, VMC has turned to SSNNL for help. VMC estimates that the population of the city will touch 38 lakh by 2035 and scarcity of water will be the main problem to tackle. Taking long-term preventive measures into consideration, the Corporation has asked SSNNL for water supply.
8220;We have made the calculation keeping in mind the changes that will take place over the next 30 years. We are in talks with the authorities in Gandhinagar and the decision is likely to come
shortly,8221; said M K Das, VMC commissioner.
The project, which is an undertaking of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission JNNURM, will supply water to the city in two phases. Nearly 160 MLD of water will be supplied to meet the requirements till 2025, another 300 MLD of water will be supplied to the city by 2035.
8220;Baroda has been growing demographically. In the meeting with VMC officials we tried to understand their requirements and have agreed to supply them water from SSNNL. But the state government will undertake the necessary assessment of water requirement as well,8221; said N V Patel, chairman SSNNL.
