KOHIMA, Aug 1: Two persons, including a jawan, were killed barely hours after the three-month cease-fire between the Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isaac-Muivah) commenced from midnight last.Officials said one person was shot dead today in the heart of the town.

Neither the identity of the victim nor that of his assailant was known.Defence sources said a security personnel was killed when underground Naga members attacked a convoy of the Army Development Group (ADG) with highly sophisticated weapons in Mokokchung area when it was on its way to Chare.

“The pattern of cease-fire violence and its violation within a few hours of its implementation indicates that there is a sinister design to see that the cease-fire does not fructify,” a defence release said.

A Manipur report, quoting intelligence sources, said it was not immediately known which underground group was responsible for the attack, but the incident clearly indicated that there were various Naga underground factions which opposed the cease-fire pact.

Sources said if the attackers were extremists belonging to NSCN(I-M) group, it indicated that it was “heading for a split”.
