The Austrian capital is opening an extra fan zone for Monday’s match between the co-hosts and Germany, expected to draw tens of thousands to the city’s public viewing areas.

In a statement Saturday, Euro 2008 officials said the city’s Gerhard Hanappi Stadium, which can fit up to 40,000 people, will open its doors Monday at 1500 GMT. The game will be broadcast live there on three video walls.

Fan trouble in Swiss cities

Some 84 people were treated for injuries in Zurich after the European Championship match between Italy and Romania, city police said Saturday. One man was knocked into the Limmat River, while another was found unconscious with head injuries shortly before midnight after the 1-1 draw, police said. The aftermath of Friday’s match was significantly more violent than previous nights, with at least eight arrests, they said. In the Swiss capital Bern, police made 105 temporary arrests after the match between the Netherlands and France, which the Dutch won 4-1.

Czechs and beer

Czech Republic striker Vaclav Sverkos, who scored in the European Championship’s opening game against Switzerland, received a keg of beer as an award for what was his first international goal in the 1-0 win. Beer may not be considered a proper prize for an athlete, but we’re talking about the Czechs, who call themselves the No. 1 beer lovers in the world. The award for the first Czech scorer at Euro 2008 was designed to motivate the players. Given the love of the nation for the golden drink, Sverkos received a symbolic 5-liter keg at the team’s base in the Alpine resort of Seefeld. As team officials fear, the players could be tempted to finish it off ahead of the decisive group match against Turkey. Sverkos will receive the proper 50-liter keg only when he returns home.
