Militants in Iraq beheaded British hostage Kenneth Bigley, three weeks after kidnapping him to press a demand for the release of women held by US-led forces, a video seen by Reuters showed on Friday. Guerrilla sources in the rebel-held city of Falluja said earlier that Bigley, who had been seized by a militant group led by alleged Al Qaeda ally Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, was killed on Thursday in Latifiya, just southwest of Baghdad.

The US military says Falluja is a stronghold of the Tawhid and Jihad group headed by Zarqawi, a Jordanian who is America8217;s main foe in Iraq. A US air strike on the city, 50 km west of the capital, killed 11 people on Friday.

A video seen by a Reuters journalist in the office of a foreign news organisation in Baghdad showed the 62-year-old engineer appearing to plead for his life as six men stood behind him. One read a statement, then cut off Bigley8217;s head with a knife and brandished it. The scenario resembled the killings of Bigley8217;s two American colleagues, who were beheaded within a week of being captured along with him. The tape showed the unshaven Bigley wearing an orange jumpsuit like those worn by detainees in US prisons, including suspects at Guantanamo Bay.

In Britain, Bigley8217;s family said it had received 8216;8216;absolute proof8217;8217; of his killing. His brother Paul urged Blair to end the war in Iraq, saying: 8216;8216;Mr Blair has blood on his hands.8217;8217; 8212;Reuters
