SURAT, Nov 29: Two persons who were rendered unconscious by carbon monoxide emanating from a generator set in a closed room in Mahalaxmi Industrial Estate on Bamroli Road on Saturday, are recovering in the New Civil and Mahavir Hospitals, but were not able to give any statement to the police, Inspector Aniruddhasinh Jadeja of the Umara Police Station said on Sunday.

Five others, including owner of the packaging unit Kanu Patel, had died after inhaling the odourless, colourless and tasteless gas. They worked till late in the night and kept the generator on while sleeping in the airtight room. Jadeja told Express Newsline that post mortem reports had proved that the victims had died due to inhaling carbon monoxide.

The police have only registered a case of accidental death as there are clearcut instructions on generator sets asking users to keep it outside while in use. It maybe mentioned that five brothers had died in similar circumstances in Ichhapore village last year.
