CHANDIGARH, March 4: More than five hundred athletes will vie for top honours in the fist North Zone veterans athletic meet, which will begin here tomorrow at Panjab University ground.

In a three-day meet, competition will be held in eight categories in the men and women sections.

The participating states includes Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Haryana.

The opening event of the meet would be 800-metre in all age group in both men and women groups.

Incidentally, some of the veteran athletes have done exceedingly well at the international level, are likely to set the track ablaze with their outstanding performance in the meet tomorrow.

Delhi’s PL Sharma is one of them, who has won laurels at the international in long jump event.

Ram Kishore (100 and 200 metre) and YP Malik (throws) of Haryana are strong contender of the titles in the men section Raj Bala (throw) would prove her mettle in the women’s group.

Chandigarh’s Gurdial Singh Saini, would also be seen in action. He will take part in the 5 km walk.

Meanwhile 80-strong Haryana team, includes 55 men and 15 women have arrived at the venue.

Distance runner –Sunita Godara, who recently won an international marathon at Cario, will be representing Delhi in the meet. Other prominent athletes who are expected to take part are Charanpreet Verma, Sada Ram, SK Pathania, Daljinder Singh, KN Tewari, Kulwinder Singh and Pawan Prakash.
