When Venkaiah Naidu proclaimed himself a Hanuman at the BJP8217;s national executive meeting in December, everyone assumed he was affirming his loyalty to L K Advani, who was giving up party presidency. But Advani8217;s successor Rajnath Singh has come to rely on Naidu so much he8217;s more like Singh8217;s own Hanuman.
For anyone wanting to figure out the reason for Singh8217;s dependence on Naidu, one obvious conclusion would be the former BJP president8217;s skills. However, party insiders don8217;t share this perception. They believe, it is part of Singh8217;s strategy to keep Advani in good humour.
Any crisis and Singh puts Naidu on the job 8212; trouble in a state unit, and Naidu is sent as trouble-shooter, any important committee and Naidu heads it. The latest committee headed by Naidu is the party8217;s 8220;high-power8221; committee to formulate its response to the issue of special economic zones.
Last fortnight Naidu was appointed chairman of a committee assigned the task of quickly preparing a blueprint for a nation-wide programme on the Vande Mataram issue.
Around the same time, Rajnath Singh deputed Naidu to Ranchi. His mandate 8212; save the tottering Arjun Munda government. When neither seemed to work, Naidu chose not to sully his hands. He returned unsuccessful and Munda facilitated a smooth transition of power.
Naidu has problems to attend to as far as Karnataka8212; he is in fact in charge of all four southern states.
