Consumers have a reason to cheer. Amid soaring prices of basic commodities, the prices of vegetables have hit an all-time low after remaining sky high for long.

The prices of tomatoes have come down by Rs 15. They are now available for Rs 10 to Rs 12 per kilogram in retail and Rs 5 in wholesale, against last week8217;s Rs 25 per kg. Surplus supply of tomatoes from Nasik, Haldwani and Ahmedabad, owing to the winter season, is one of the reasons behind the dip in prices. Traders, however, claim that the sealing of the border following the terror attacks in Mumbai has severely hit the trade of tomatoes to Pakistan, which has in turn resulted in a surplus supply within the country.

8220;It8217;s raining tomatoes here,8221; says Brij Mohan, vice-president of the Sabzi Mandi Arhati Association, Sector 26. 8220;Never in winters have the prices of tomatoes dipped so low and that too within a week. Besides, all other vegetables are coming cheap,8221; he adds. Ram Parkash, a vegetable seller, says: 8220;Till February, tomatoes will flood the market and the prices are bound to see a further dip. Heavy rains had affected tomato production, but the crop has recovered fast.8221;

The prices of peas have also dropped from Rs 30 to Rs 10 per kg.

With all types of seasonal vegetables arriving in surplus, carrot, cauliflower and cabbage have seen a dip of Rs 4 to 5 per kg since last week.

8220;We can look forward to some savings at least this month. Prices of vegetables affect the overall monthly household budget,8221; says Nitin Batra, a resident of Sector 15.
