Varada, Lakhani schools champions

MUMBAI, Sept 30: Varada Bal and Dhruv Lakhani triumphed in the under-16 singles of the MSSA-Colgate Inter-schools Table Tennis Tournament at the University Sports Pavilion today.Varada Gokuldham beat Shivali Nayak 8212; who had the consolation of anchoring St Joseph8217;s Convent, Bandra, to the team title 8212; 21-18, 19-21, 22-20 for her maiden schools8217; title. Lakhani whipped left-handed Vaibhav Rane of Balmohan 21-7, 21-13 to clinch his maiden crown as well.

Sahil Kukreja, Shishir Juvekar and Aman Balgu were the titlists in the boys8217; under-14, under-12, under-10 respectively while Rujuta Rege and Neeraja Kukday were the under-14, under-12 winners among girls.

Kukreja also took apart Lakhani to fetch Don Bosco the team title in the crucial first reverse singles while Rujuta could not do the same for AVM, Santacruz, despite winning both her singles matches.

Varada, who is one among the select few to be a part of the Bombay Council of Talent Search which identifies students excelling in academics, betteredher runner-up placing achieved last year. The ninth standard student held her nerves in the toughest of all finals to win a match in which little separated the two.
