
CALCUTTA, MAY 22: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Friday stated that the expulsion of dissident Congress leaders Sharad Pawar, P A Sangma and Tariq Anwar 8220;smacks of fascism and deserves denunciation from all those who hold democracy dear.8221;
Vajpayee, who left for Manipur early on Friday, dismissed the attempt by the Congress to 8220;describe the dissent as BJP-inspired,8221; saying it would not convince the people.
Stating that 8220;this shows that the Congress has nothing but contempt for internal democracy,8221; Vajpayee remarked, 8220;Recent history reminds us that whenever the Congress has sought to crush the dissent and debate on the matters that inconvenient to the party leadership, the country has had to pay a heavy price.8221;
In another important development, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee on Friday stated that the Prime Minister Vajpayee was correct in calling for a national debate on the issue.
