CHANDIGARH, April 27: The Fourth Economic Census of the Union Territory of Chandigarh is being carried out in order to fill the data gap in the unorganised segments of different sectors of economy, particularly in the non-agricultural sector.
The census commenced on April 23 as part of the All India Programme. In a statement issued here, UT Joint Secretary Finance-cum-Director Economics and Statistics said that census work was of global importance. The entire future planning relating to economic development and estimation of national economy depends on correct and reliable data collected during the census, he said. As many as 421 officers will carry out the census in the union territory on a house-to-house basis, both in rural and urban areas.
The census officials will collect information in four forms 8211; house list form, house list abstract, enterprise list and enterprise list abstract. Census village will be taken as the primary unit in rural areas whereas in urban areas, it will be an urban frame survey block. There will be approximately 975 blocks in urban areas and 34 blocks in rural areas in Chandigarh.
The first economic census was held in 1977, the second in 1980 and the third in 1990. It covers the whole of India except Ladakh, Kargil, some interior villages of Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
