US House passes resolution on Mumbai attacks

US House of Representatives has unanimously passed a Resolution calling upon Pakistan to work with India to ensure all responsible for Mumbai attacks are brought to justice.

The US House of Representatives has unanimously passed a Resolution calling upon Pakistan to work with India to ensure all responsible for Mumbai attacks are brought to justice and its territory is not used as a safe haven and training ground for terrorists.

Welcoming Islamabad’s call for a thorough investigation, the Resolution calls upon the government of Pakistan to “work in full cooperation with the government of India to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice; and prevent its territory from serving as a safe-haven and training ground for terrorists”.

The Resolution was unanimously cleared by the House on Wednesday expressing its condolences to the families and friends of the nearly 200 victims that were killed in the November 26 attacks including the six Americans.

The Resolution which was sponsored by New York law maker Carolyn McCarthy and co-sponsored by at least 53 other members says it “joins President George W Bush and President-elect Barack Obama in expressing the solidarity of the people and government of the US with the people and government of India at this difficult time; and vows its support and readiness to provide all appropriate assistance and resources to the Indian government as it works to bring the terrorists responsible for the attacks to justice.”

It also expressed desire for improved coordination between the US and India, with the goal of combating terrorism and advancing international peace and security and has rejected “any effort to confuse or associate the horrific attacks on Mumbai with a particular people or faith as a whole”.

Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty, who had previously called on the school to respect the student’s right to wear the hijab, said on Friday that the school was answerable to the government regarding the circumstances surrounding the girl’s decision.
