NEW DELHI, JANUARY 6: At least 12 people were injured in a bomb blast in a train at Old Delhi railway station this evening, police said.
The explosion took place around 4.07 p.m in a second class compartment of Saharanpur-bound Shamli Express immediately after it arrived at platform number nine from the yard, DCP (Crime) P K Srivastava said.
No group has claimed responsibility so far.The coach, fourth from the engine, was sparsely occupied. The blast shattered window panes, ripped apart all the seats and created a one-metre radius hole in the bogie, he said. The train was scheduled to depart for Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh at 5.15 p.m.
The bomb had perhaps been kept under a seat in one of the second class compartments, he said. Nine injured people were shifted to nearby Bara Hindu Rao hospital while three others were admitted to a private nursing home.
While senior police officials who visited the spot, said it was a low intensity crude bomb, police sources said it was a sophisticated explosive deviceof low intensity.
Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory team reached the spot to determine the nature of explosive used in the blast. A sniffer dog squad had also been pressed into service to examine the spot.
The entire area has been cordoned off by the police and a large number of personnel deployed at the station. Movement of people at all entry and exit points was being strictly monitored.
Srivastava said security at New Delhi and Nizamuddin stations had also been tightened. Meanwhile, railway sources said some trains had been rescheduled due to the blast.
