
The ULFA on Thursday said it would work towards holding direct talks with the Centre if the government initiated steps to create a peaceful atmosphere in Assam and security forces exercised restraint. This would be in line with decisions taken at a meeting on June 22 between the Centre and the ULFA-nominated People8217;s Consultative Group PCG, ULFA chairman Arabindo Rajkhowa said in a statement.
Supporting the decisions taken at the meeting, he said if 8220;those decisions are implemented then we are ready to take the next step towards holding direct talks with the Centre8221;.
About Wednesday8217;s meeting between the Centre and PCG members,Rajkhowa said, 8220;We are aware of yesterday8217;s talks involving the Centre and two PCG members, but there is nothing new for us to comment on.8221; During the talks, the Centre had sought a written assurance from the ULFA about its desire to hold direct negotiations.
