Asam Sahitya Sabha, the state’s highest literary body, on Friday came down heavily on the ULFA, rejected its demand for sovereignty and accused the outfit of defaming and bringing disgrace to the people of Assam through its recent spate of violence against Hindi-speaking residents of the state.
“Violence of any kind cannot be supported. The ULFA has not only brought disgrace to the people of Assam, but has also defamed the Assamese people in front of the people of the rest of India,” Kanaksen Deka, veteran litterateur and president of the Sabha said.
Deka said, “Assam is an integral part of India, and the Asam Sahitya Sabha does not support any demand for sovereignty of Assam.” He said that the ULFA’s allegation that “India was trying to colonise Assam is not only misleading and unfounded but also a dangerous allegation”.
Deka instead asked the ULFA to become part of the democratic process and find solutions for various problems of the state through peaceful and democratic means. “What groups like the ULFA could best do is become part of this wonderful democratic process, contest elections and address the problems faced by the state,” he said.
On Thursday, AASU had lashed out at ULFA after its chief Paresh Barua called the body and its leaders agents of the Indian state.
