Suspected ULFA militants gunned down an RSS leader in Nalbari in Lower Assam yesterday. In protest, different organisations of the Sangh Parivar have called for a statewide dawn-to-dusk bandh tomorrow.

Schoolteacher Sukleswar Medhi, a Vibhag Karyavah of the Nalbari district unit of the RSS, was shot at from close range at Balitara village under Ghograpar police station.

The Army jawans shot dead one of the two assailants while they were fleeing. Mehdi is the second RSS leader in the district to be killed by ULFA, which had shot dead a Sangh organiser in June 1990.

Meanwhile, the BJP today described the incident another example of worsening law and order in the state.

Pramod Mahajan, the BJP general secretary in charge of Assam, today condemned the killing and held the Congress government responsible.

BJP has taken up the issue at the highest level. Its president L.K. Advani today met Home Minister Shivraj Patil and apprised him of situation in the state.
