A pall of gloom fell on Noblenagar, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, as the body of Devang Raval reached home tonight. Raval was killed in anti-Asian riots in the Ugandan capital Kampala on Thursday.
The mourners included his neighbours, who had seen Raval grow up and migrate to Uganda in search of a better life. People had been waiting in the narrow lane outside Raval8217;s residence for hours to catch a glimpse of his coffin.
Due to some miscommunication, the family had been expecting the body to arrive at 2 pm, but the plane carrying it landed only after 7.30 pm. While Raval8217;s father Shailesh managed to maintain his composure all along, his mother was in shock.
Apart from the family, 200 other people, including Mayor Amit Shah, Deputy Mayor Deepak Makwana, Leader of the Opposition Arjun Modhvadia, Sardarnagar Municipal Councillors Ashok Asani and Vipin Chikka were present to receive the body at the airport.
Hailing from a lower-middle class family, 25-year-old Raval was killed when a protest by environmentalists in Kampala turned violent, leading to attacks on businesses run by people of Indian origin. A Swaminarayan temple, a Bank of Baroda branch and several shops owned by people of Indian origin suffered damage in the violence.
A marketing graduate from L D Art College, Raval had moved to Uganda in March 2004 on a work permit.
