PUNE, MARCH 8: The chase to fetch milk from the delivery van ended two-year-old Ujwala Salve life after she was caught under the wheels of the vehicle on Paud Road on Sunday evening.

Samadhan Maruti Shinde, a businessman from Sangamwadi, was distributing milk among the slum-dwellers opposite the garbage depot on Paud Road when the incident took place.

Police said Shinde distributes milk to the slum dwellers every evening. Over 100 persons had gathered when the Tempo Trax carrying milk reached around 5 p.m. on Sunday. The slum-dwellers started chasing the approaching van. Ujwala and her grandmother were among them.

Ujwala fell down after losing her balance. The Tempo Trax ran over her before she could be moved away to safety.

A profusely bleeding Ujwala was shifted to a nearby hospital by the driver, Shivshankar Mallikarjun Swamy 23 of Tingare Nagar. She was moved to another private hospital where she succumbed to the injuries. Swamy was arrested and charged with rash driving and causing Ujwala8217;s death later in the night.

Grocer duped
Hira Singh Ganapat Singh Purohit, a 20-year-old resident of Mangalwar Peth, has been arrested by Vishrambaug police on charges of duping a Narayan Peth-based grocer.

Police said Hira Singh, who posed himself as a caterer, bought grocery on credit from Kishore Sarda8217;s Kishore Provisional Stores on February 18 and did not pay the dues. Hira Singh was arrested after Sarda lodged a first information report against him on Sunday.
