
Sydney: Two African track athletes will miss the Olympics after testing positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone in random tests conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA.
At the end of a one-day International Amateur Athletic Federation IAAF council meeting on Tuesday, IAAF spokesman Giorgio Reineri identified the athletes as Kenyan Simon Kemboi and Nigerian woman Dupe Osime. He said they were both banned from the Games.
Kemboi is a member of the Kenyan 4215;400 metres relay team while Osime broke the Nigerian national 800 metres record this year. The council also decided tosend the drugs case of Ukrainian shot putter Aleksandr Bagach to arbitration, suspending him from the shot competition on the opening day of the athletics programme on Friday.
REQUEST REJECTED: The council also rejected a request by Germany8217;s 1992 Olympic 5,000 metres champion Dieter Baumann for reinstatement. Baumann was banned for two years by the IAAF arbitration panel on Monday after positive tests for nandrolone last October and November.
