SURAT, FEB 16: The Special Branch of the Surat police on Thursday detained a Pakistani woman, residing in Gopipura area of the city on the alleged charges of overstaying in the country even after the expiry of her visa.

According to police, Farida Abdulmiya Shakarwala 40 had come to India on a long term visa which expired on February 5. She was booked under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, for overstaying in the country after the expiry of her visa without extending it. Farida was originally a resident of the city, she had emigrated to Karachi after she married a Pakistani.

Later she divorced him and returned to India and again married here to a Indian national, the sources said. Similarly Special Branch detained a Pakistani national Nooruddin Poonawala 45 for not reporting in the city police within 24 hours of arriving in the city, last week. He had come from Karachi to Mumbai then travelled to Surat on February 9 to attend a marriage but he did not report his arrival to police.
