Two held with opium in Mohali

Two persons were arrested with 2.2 kg of opium, worth over Rs 1 lakh, in Mohali late on Sunday.

Two persons were arrested with 2.2 kg of opium, worth over Rs 1 lakh, in Mohali late on Sunday.

The two were identified as Gulshan Kumar, a resident of Kharar, and Pardeep Kumar alias Kala of Sohana near Mohali. Pardeep is the brother-in-law of Gulshan.

The accused were remanded in police custody for one day by a local court on Monday.

During preliminary investigation, it was discovered that both men had a history of narcotics trade, said Sub-Inspector Sarabjeet Singh of Crime Investigating Agency wing of Mohali police.

Around 7 pm on Sunday, the duo, riding a Royal Enfield motorcycle with a Mohali registration number, was stopped at a checkpoint near Ivy Hospital in Sector 71.

When searched, 1.4 kg opium was recovered from Pardeep while 820 gm of contraband was found in the possession of Gulshan.

A fresh case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered against the duo at the Phase I police station.
