PATIALA, July 9: Two confirmed cases of cholera were reported from the government Rajindra Hospital here today.

The cases were confirmed by tests conducted by the microbiology department of the Government Medical College. Hospital authorities have informed the office of the civil surgeon about the cases.

The two patients were admitted to the paedriatics department of Rajindra Hosital. When they showed signs of cholera, they were were isolated and tests conducted, which confirmed that they were suffering from cholera.

Both the patients, aged between two and two-and-a-half years, were reported to have been cured of the disease but were still being kept under observation.

While one of the patients was reported to be from a locality in Samana town near here, the other one was from Badungar area of the city. The district health authorities claimed that necessary action had been taken to identify the cause of the infection and check spread of the disease. Samples of water from the concerned localities have been taken and chlorine tablets distributed for purification of water. In the Samana case, all members of the patient’s family were reported to be normal and authorities were still trying to figure out the cause and source of the infection.

In the Badungar case, a migrant family from Muzaffarnagar was said to have visited the family of the patient. This family was being traced and the patient isolated.

Deputy Commissioner Viswajeet Khanna said that necessary preventive steps were being taken to check the spread of the disease.
