As the country8217;s maritime interests expands, there would be proportional increase in external attempts to destabilise peace and progress, Defence Minister AK Antony said today.

Addressing the International Maritime Security Conference organised by Observer Foundation here, he said the government would progressively raise tougher security apparatus along the country8217;s coast, with a far more empowered Navy and Coast Guard.

8220;Recently there were reports of attempts to sneak in contrabrand through coastal lanes,8221; Antony said pointing out that coastal regions were still vulnerable.

Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta said that security forces stumbling upon some arms in sea-bound containers at the Kochi port recently proved that sea lane security had to be further tightened.

8220;The Kochi bust could be only the tip of the iceberg,8221; Mehta said, adding under the new security system installed at various ports and container stations, now almost 96 per cent of the cargo 8212; both inbound and outbound 8212; were both being screened.
