‘‘In case your spouse is an employee of the school and his/her service is concluded, then in such a case it will be deemed that your services are also concluded with the school, without any need for giving reasons, (where applicable)’’.
This is one of the several new-fangled rules brought into force by Gautam Chatterjee, headmaster of the Lawrence School, Sanawar, making the staff see red.
Some, seeing in it a sign of prospective ‘‘action’’, have already started looking for alternate jobs. ‘‘Dictatorial’’ is how most sum up the headmaster’s list of do’s and don’ts. Sample this. In case you are found guilty of any misconduct or found not performing your duty, neither compensation nor notice will be given for termination of your services. And these ‘‘governing service rules are subject to change by the school’s headmaster’’.
Teachers complain that the rules talk about insubordination to the headmaster and stress on the need for accountability towards him. But what has stunned everyone is the rule about clubbing spouses for disciplinary action. ‘‘How can they terminate the services of a teacher’s spouse for no fault of his/her? It’s against the principle of natural justice,’’ a teacher said.
Chatterjee, however, said that he had not done anything new. These rules were already in place and he had merely interpreted them for the welfare of the school.
Chatterjee said that he did not intend to take the extreme step of terminating the services of the spouse of an offending teacher. ‘‘Such a step will be taken when the person who is being sacked oversteps the limits of decency,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, the parents have also approached the CBSE alleging that some teachers do not have the required BEd degree. The letter has been sent to the Regional Director, CBSE, P.I. Saboo. Saboo said that he has sent the letter to the headmaster and also to the Secretary Education, Government of India, who is also the school’s chairman.
