TOP amateurs for Classic Stripes golf

MUMBAI, DEC 30: A total of ninety two amateur golfers, among them all the members of the Indian golf team, will be seen in action at the Bombay Presidency Golf Course when the Western India Open Amateur Golf Championship, sponsored by Classic Stripes Pvt Ltd, tees off on Tuesday, January 2 and concludes on January 5, 2001.

According to Kishore Musale, MD of Classic Stripes, who also sponsored the recently concluded Western India junior and sub junior championships, the pack of amateur golfers will be led by Calcutta’s Rahil Gangjee, a scratch handicap golfer, who has been enjoying tremendous form of late. Also among the fancied names will be golfers like Ashok Kumar, Simarjee Singh, Shiv Kapur, Anitya Chand (all Delhi), Manav das (Ambala), Sheraz Kalra (Chennai) and Jaideep Patwardhan (Pune). Mumbai’s challenge rests in the hands of BPGC’s Gagan Verma, who is the city’s top amateur golfer with a handicap of only 2. Delhi’s 18-year-old Ashok Kumar will be returning to BPGC a year after he had completed the unique record of scoring an eagle, birdie and an eagle on the last three holes when he was in the junior ranks, at the junior Western India Open last year.
