Although many people desire that the category, 8220;None of the above8221;, is made available on the EVMs, I doubt whether many voters will actually use this category.
Large members of the prosperous and educated do not even bother to vote, not because there is no good candidate available, but because they are lethargic, lazy, apathetic or just not interested in exercising their right to vote.
They explain their lethargy by stating that the candidates on offer are useless and not worth their votes. A few persons even use the holiday given on polling day to have a good time, go for a picnic or throw a party! Therefore, even if the category, 8220;None of the above8221;, was included, it would make little difference.
All politicians are not corrupt, selfish or bad and all non-politicians are not clean, selfless or good. Non-politicians can fearlessly blame politicians in general, but politicians cannot return the compliment as they do not wish to displease voters. If non-politicians were without blemish, our society would not have been so crime-ridden.
After all, not every crime in this world is committed by a politician. There are black sheep in every section of society, including bureaucrats, doctors, teachers, judges, journalists, and so on. Remember that adage: people get the government they deserve. If our Member of Parliament or state legislator is selfish and corrupt, we must blame ourselves for electing him. If a politician known to be corrupt contests, we must campaign against him/her as much as we can. Similarly, we should not vote for a candidate contesting a parliamentary election, if he/she does not know the issues to be discussed in Parliament.
There are many people who are proud of saying that they are not interested in politics. I regard such persons as chronically selfish. If everybody had felt this way, our nation could not have freed itself from foreign rule.
In fact, politics is nothing but ways to solve the problems of our nation. Ultimately, the nation is our biggest family and we must sacrifice something for this family, just as we do so for our children and parents. People don8217;t say they are not interested in their families. In the same way, everybody must take some interest in politics 8212; and vote. We owe this to ourselves as citizens in a multi-party democracy.
