
DHARAMSALA, Dec 16: Fearing threat to the lives of officials and religious leaders, including the Dalai Lama, from the activists of Shugden sect, the Security Department of the Tibetan government-in-exile has sounded the police authorities here and sought security from them.
Tashi Namgyal, joint secretary, Department of Security, has written a letter to the district police, requesting special security for Khamtul Rinpoche, a highly revered monk of Nyingmapa tradition and a vocal opponent of the Shugden cult.
Rinpoche has allegedly received threatening letters from the Shugden followers. One such letter says, 8220;The lives of a number of Tibetan officials, including the Dalai Lama, are under threat from the proponents of Shugden group. Khamtul Rinpoche, a highly venerated monk of Nyingmapa tradition, is among them.8221;
In the letter, Namgyal has urged the provision of a security guard for Rinpoche, adding that in the absence of the guard, Rinpoche8217;s son, Abhan Tulkhu, has been looking after his security needs.
Confirming the request, Senior Superintendent of Police SSP K. C. Sadyal said, 8220;It is very difficult to provide security for individuals.8221; Instead of the district police, the CID and the state government should be approached for the purpose, he added.
In February last year, Lobsang Gyasto, principal of the Dialectics Institute, and his two disciples had been done to death and the Tibetan government had blamed the Shugden group for the killings.
