Maoist Chief Prachanda said today that only conspirators would oppose the elections to the Constituent Assembly in Nepal on June 20. His comments come in the wake of doubts expressed by the Election Commission and the international community, particularly the United Nations UN, about whether Nepal will be able to go to polls by the said date.
Prachanda8217;s statement came within hours of his meeting Ian Martin, special representative of the UN Secretary General. Martin is reported to have suggested that a credible election may not be possible by the June 20 deadline fixed by the eight parties, including the Maoists.
8220;All must remain alert to the conspiracies being hatched to foil the elections to the Constituent Assembly scheduled for June 20,8221; Prachanda warned. But he did not identify who the conspirators are.
The Election Commission has expressed reservations about the date8212;which is barely 75 days away 8212; pointing out that election legislations have not been enacted. Moreover, even the process of constitution delimitation and final voter list preparation are still underway.
Prime Minister Koirala had announced that there could be a unusual election 8216;in unusual circumstances8221;, asserting that he would hold the polls within the given date.
