Till yesterday, the state government maintained that it did not know why supercop K.P.S. Gill had come to Gujarat. Today, it said Gill has been appointed security advisor to the Chief Minister.
Narendra Modi claimed he had invited the former Punjab police chief to Gujarat to ‘‘raise the efficiency graph of, and infuse professionalism into, the state police force.’’
Sources in the CMO said ‘‘since Gill has been appointed by the state government, he will report to the Chief Minister only.
The question of him reporting to the Centre under Article 355 does not arise’’. Modi confirmed that Gill had taken up his new assignment. He added that Gill’s experience in containing terrorism in Punjab would help the border state meet the challenges posed to its internal security.
Stating that he held a meeting with Gill on Friday night, Modi said they discussed measures to curb communal violence and terrorist activities. Steps to make the state police force more professional and efficient in countering communalism were also discussed.
According to Modi, the decision to appoint Gill as his security advisor was taken in keeping with the NHRC’s suggestion for adopting a professional approach towards the police force.
