Around 5.30 am on Tuesday, 23-year-old Devansh Chauhan, a first-year PGDM student at Greater Noida’s BIMTECH, left his home in Agra to return to college after a three-day stay.

A party was held at his home on Saturday to celebrate his father’s retirement, a Circle Officer in Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force. Surendra Singh Chauhan had retired on August 31.

Hours later, Devansh was battling for his life at Greater Noida’s Kailash Hospital.

Devansh had sustained a bullet injury while his 22-year-old classmate Deepak Kumar was lying dead — both found inside a room of their college hostel on Tuesday.

Police also recovered a gun from the spot. According to his father, the gun that the police recovered from the room belonged to him. It was his personal revolver.

“I used to keep it inside an almirah and locked it. I don’t know when he took it out and brought it along,” the father said.

Chief Medical Officer, Viresh Bhadauria, said that Devansh, currently in the ICU, was critical.

Youngest among three siblings, Devansh completed his B.Tech from a private college in Mathura and was preparing for government exams before taking admission in BIMTECH. He has been staying in Greater Noida for the last three years.

On Monday, he had also submitted his fees for the third trimester online as the exams were due in ten days.

According to a few students whom The Indian Express spoke to, both Devansh and Deepak were among the toppers of their class. “The incident happened on the first floor of the boys’ hostel. Since then, the college has asked us not to talk about it,” one of the students said. The student also revealed that Devansh and Deepak were friends, not roommates.

On Tuesday evening, outside the ICU, sat Surendra, brother Shivang Chauhan and cousin Shristi.

Main kiske liye jiyunga agar isko kuch ho gaya toh? Biwi ko main pehle hi kho chuka hoon. (Whom will I live for if something happens to him? I have already lost my wife),” the devastated father said. Devansh lost his mother in 2021 during the second wave of Covid.

“He took a taxi from a stand near our house,” said Shivang.

“Around 7.30 am, when I called him, he told me that he was about to reach college,” the father said.

That was the last time he spoke to his son. Soon after, around noon on Tuesday, the college informed him that his son was “seriously ill” and was being taken to the hospital.

“My brother had reached the college around 9.30 am and it was 11.26 am when security officials saw both of them (Devansh and Deepak) in the (hostel) room,” added Shivang.

The college authorities could not be reached for comment.
